All Together Now!

It's no secret that I think we have far too much self-esteem these days. Everyone who tries out for the team has to be on the squad no matter how horrible they are ("I'm fifth-string junior varsity! Check out my letter jacket!"), we give trophies and ribbons just for participating, we hold graduation ceremonies from freakin' kindergarten and allow our children to be tactless and mean through liberal use of the term, "I'm just very honest!"

It's no wonder we are raising a generation of narcissistic, emotionally detached, socially-inept malcontents with no tools for handling the disappointments life throws their way. You know what, parents? Kids already think the world revolves around them - you don't have to enforce it with Barney songs and self-righteous tantrums to the teacher who gives your precious child his or her first "C." The world would be a lot better place if we spent less time teaching kids how special each and every one of them is, and more time teaching them good citizenship and how to do their part to make the world a better place for the six billion other equally-special people who live in the world with them.

That being said, Superboy is as naive as they come. Never trust a group of children when they speak in unison. They'll be playing around abandoned oil wells and giving each other tattoos the second his back is turned.

Oh Adam, you are preaching to the choir. Hear hear! I LOATHE self-esteem! Criminals have huge self-esteem...that's why they are criminals.

That's why I was such a mean mother, if you listen to my kids.

"The Incredibles" dealt with these issues in a pretty funny way.

The REALLY scary thing to me is the kids talking in unison. Kids never do anything in unison unless it's part of a bigger, usually evil, plan (think "Children of the Corn," "Logan's Run," etc.) These kids are not only planning to tattoo one another, but are most likely planning to implant Kryptonite in their tattoos so they don't have to listen to any more SuperLectures.
